Many people, particularly new parents, find the activity of
buying clothes for a baby a daunting one. Uncertainty about sizing, comfort and durability add to the stress of picking what's right for the baby in question. This guide aims to help friends, relatives and even you pick out what's right for your baby.
Buy a few pairs of clothes per growing stage
The general rule of thumb is four to six pieces of clothing per 3 month growth period should be sufficient to meet your baby's needs. That's not to say that buying a few outfits more is a bad idea. Just keep in mind that healthy babies grow quite rapidly and can very well outgrow some outfits before ever wearing them!
Be careful when choosing fabrics
Your baby's clothing should be comfortable and made of breathable fabrics. Typically, clothing with high cotton content is preferred. This promotes baby skin breathing and helps prevent skin rashes and irritations. The surrounding environment can be tough on babies' skin. Wearing the proper fabrics can help babies grow accustomed to the harshness of the world outside the womb.
One-piece outfits over two-piece outfits
Avoiding the potential discomfort that pants would cause around the baby's belly can be achieved by opting for one-piece outfits. These allow for more breathing room and are more comfortable as the baby grows throughout nursing.
Snap buttons over conventional buttons
This is mostly a matter of convenience. Metal snap buttons are much easier to fasten and unfasten than conventional buttons used in adult clothing. This can be important when the situation calls for a quick change of clothes such as baby discomfort.
Choose higher-end clothing brands
Better quality clothes are usually made of higher end fabrics and are in most cases more comfortable for the baby. Also, these tend to last longer which can be beneficial for handing down to younger babies.
