In 1978, I purchased a Canon F-1N. Over the years, I accumulated a number of lenses, a motor winder, a flash unit, and selection of filters. I shot more than 4,000 images with that camera. I am a control freak and I loved the creative control the camera gave me. In 2002, I was told that I would have to start buying used camera bodies because Canon no longer made parts for the F-1N. Hearing this, my wife gave me a Nikon Coolpix 5700. I entered the digital age lamenting that I had lost control. Any attempt at manually taking control was aggressively resisted by the camera. The auto-focus was so slow that it could be timed with an hourglass. Recently, I just purchased a Canon EOS 30D with a 17-85 mm EF-S Lens. Finally, a digital camera that puts me in control like my old F-1N; manual shutter, manual aperture, and manual focus. I've tested it in a variety of lighting conditions, bright sunlight, and available indoor light. I've taken photographs of a full moon and a blazing red sunset. The images were every bit as good as similar photographs taken with my F-1N. When I'm lazy, I can tell the camera to do everything for me just like my Nikon, only faster. While this camera cost more than my first new car, it is something special and worth the price. Any serious amateur, or professional photographer will appreciate this camera. Photographers who are content with point and shoot should buy something else.
Pros: Finally, a digital SLR that behaves like a real camera
Cons: None that I've found so far.

This is truly a great camera. It includes many features found on pro-level cameras 2 or 3 times more expensive. My favorite feature is the ability to shoot in RAW format. This combined with Canon's Professional editing software allows you to make even mediocre pictures come out beautiful. I've printed at 16x20 with no visible pixelation.

The camera will get you up and running quickly with the preset modes, but the strength of this camera is when you abandon the presets and go into Canon's Creative mode.

The ONLY drawback I found with the camera is the inability to use the LCD display as a viewfinder. There are just some shots where you need to hold the camera overhead.
Pros: Image quality, ease of use, software
Cons: Dim screen, can't use LCD as a viewfinder

This is by far the best camera I've ever owned. I especially like the sports mode that takes 5 frames per second. No more timing action shots. If the keeper is going to happen, I just shoot away and find it later.

Starting from scratch, I have a long list of add-on lenses and other goodies to buy (over time) to make this rig even better.

But I'm loving this camera.
Pros: Easy to Use out of the box
Cons: need two books to learn all the features
